What should you do after an accident has occurred?
An auto accident can be a traumatic experience. Try to remain calm and remember that accidents do happen. Here are some important steps to follow in the event of an auto accident:
• Don’t leave the scene of the accident.
• Take steps to prevent further accidents and/or injury – park safely, turn on emergency flashers. If necessary due to safety reasons, move away from the vehicles and warn any other motorists of the potential hazards.
• Check to see if anyone is injured. Help any injured persons. In the event of injuries, contact emergency services so that medical assistance can be obtained as soon as possible.
• Call the police or ask someone to call for you, or report the accident to the local police department.
• Give the other driver(s) your name, your insurance company name and phone number, the vehicle’s license plate number and your operator’s license number.
• Obtain as much information as possible about other parties involved. This information should include the names, addresses and phone numbers of all the other drivers, passengers and witnesses. The year, make, model, color and registration number of all vehicles involved is very important. Also obtain insurance information from all parties involved in the accident, including the insurance company name and policy numbers.
• Discuss the specifics of the accident only with the police. Obtain the investigating police officer’s name and ask for a copy of the police report.
• If you have a camera, feel free to take photos of the accident scene and vehicles (if it is safe to do so).
• Report your claim to your insurance company immediately. Please contact your auto insurance carrier directly (use the link for Claims on this website for all contact numbers for claims) or feel free to contact us during normal business hours.
